She stares into the fire
smiles and shakes her head
light shines off her teardrops
I remember what she said
" the flames are warm, and quiet
they comfort me like a friend,
then rise on smoke and cinder
to vanish in the wind"
she said "will I ever fall in love"
I said " I didn't know,
but hope's a sanctuary where lonely hearts
can go".

the night was growing colder
I put my around her shoulder
and wished I had the words to
comfort her.

in the silence, in the moonlight,
the tide comes slowly in....
she changes all she touches,
and slips away again.
her eyes were like the ocean
they changed from blue to gray
mirroring emotions
that rose to dance, and play.

i pointed out the northern star
the one that guides the way
she said she always loved the stars,
but there much too far away.
i said "orion hunts in darkness
his bow forever drawn,
pleiades spins and pirouettes
racing towards the dawn"
she smiled, and called me "poet"
i said "a poet just for you"
she kissed my cheek and said;
"how sweet, if only it were true".

she tries to hide her pain from me
i see it in her eyes
her freedom lies before her
closer than her dreams can fly
she said "let's take all the tears we've cried
and leave them by the shore
the tide will come and sweep away
those tears forever more....."

she stares into the fire
the embers glowing red
the morning was approaching
i remember what she said
"the flames were warm and quiet
they soothed me like a friend,
then rose on smoke, and cinder
and vanished in the wind"
i said " it's good to be here with you,
what would you like to do"
she said" anything.... whatever,
as long as its with you"
in the silence, as the dawn came,
i reached out for her hand,
and as i held her closer...
the sunlight warmed the sand.

Judges Comments:

In the lyrics she calls him 'poet', but reading these lyrics I think 'artist' is more apropos. Check out the way Joe uses each verse to combine the setting with the conversation: it resembles and reads like a screenplay. Then throw in the rich metaphors and you have an excellent set of lyrics. These lyrics show how it pays off when a lot of thought is put into the work.

Very nice,  Joe, please send another.
