Waiting For The Phone To Ring

I see you now for what you are not the dream you try to be
The thin veiled lies that hide behind a voice that's killing me
You're running round with someone else and I can't let it be
I think it's time I left you behind and got back to being me

When you call I won't crawl back there on my knees
So go and find some other fool to mold the way you please
I've hit the ground running there's other places I got to be
You'll be fine you'll put us behind don't cry no tears for me

Chorus:
You're thinking I'll be waiting for the phone to ring
That shows you don't know much about me
There's too many reasons to cut you loose
Too many things I'd like to do and see

I'll be playing at some swinging door where the drinks are flowing free
Latched up with some long-legged blond where the two-steppers go to be
It's a clear blue night and the neon lights are calling my name out loud
I'll get real tight and I'll be all right swinging with the rest of the crowd

So run back to that other fool the one you picked above me
And listen to his sweet nothings about the way it's going to be
Then tell you lies about your sympathy for the pain you're causing me
Then you can keep your sweet ideas about the way things ought to be

Chorus:
You're thinking I'll be waiting for the phone to ring
That shows you don't know much about me
There's too many reasons to cut you loose
Too many things I'd like to do and see

No honey I won't be waiting for the phone to ring

Triple T Truck Stop

There's a  joint just off the exit
where drivers refuel their trucks
from a booth they call their boss
and eat a cheeseburger deluxe
with her kid sister's earrings
her eyes an anti-freeze green
Jan's absorbed this town like a rag
in a bottle of gasoline
though her sister's paying for
college by walking the strip
Jan'll stick to pulling doubles
and stealing the other's tips

chorus
the girls split a ticket
on the weekly lottery
they sneak whiskey sours, to help pass the hours
or drink 'em straight when they're watery
with free meals for smugglers
and free coffee for cops
buddy if you're able, leave more on a table
at the Triple T Truck Stop

she should've taken that job
at the motel 'cross the street
night clerks don't make tips, but at least
she'd've gotten off her feet
her minds not on refills
something at home's drawing ants
and the county'll take her kids
if given half a chance
no, she won't mess with the cops
and she won't mess with the courts
by the time they get in gear
theft is Jan's child support

chorus

things slow after the bar rush
the dishwasher mops the floor
the waitresses trade off coupons
for foods they still can't afford
Kenny had joked for years
he'd pay Jan's way in his rack
and this time she spent her smoke break
in his Peterbuilt sack
she lost her coupons in his cot
with that first child support check
but tonight she'll take her own tips
and go home with self-respect

chorus

Mexicali Moonshine

We left home for a farm
at the feet of the Dragoons
where mountain tops are fabled
to shine without a moon
we watched that first sundown
in thin shoes and worn out coats
all we had was a hard day ahead
and weak tea for our throats

I fought this stubborn soil
and made it admit it's mine
now all it lacks is the spoil
of Mexicali Moonshine

two cords stacked by the stove
when winter drove us inside
I threw a log on the fire
and lay beside my bride
while we slept, the flame
returned to ash and embers
funny how sleep has a hand in
what a man remembers

look how those old tree roots
broke our sidewalk, with time
I know that nagging at my boots
is just Mexicali Moonshine

once I rose every morning
and chose the path of my day
now I'm at the mercy of the field
where the sun has the say
sounds of planting have replaced
the roar of the Sandhill's wing
but I'm  still waiting for a day
when moonshine won't mean a thing

it took months of travel
for these dirt roads to unwind
one night my dreams will unravel
without Mexicali Moonshine

I'll Never Make It Through This Fall

I've tried to forget you
But I haven't managed yet
It may not bother you
But my eyes are always wet

I gave all I had to give you
Till I could'nt give no more
Now you've taken all that love
And thrown it out the door

I don't know what you want from me
You have me climbing up the wall
You promised me so many things
I wasn't ready for this fall

It seems the more I go ahead
The farther back I go
The more I think I know you
The less I seem to know

The tears don't ease the pain girl
Of your walking out on me, at all
I might have made it through this winter
But i'll never make it through this fall

I tried my best to keep your love
You seem to fight me all the way
My love for you was strong and true
Not the games you want to play

I want you to know that I love you
Even though you never write or call
I might have made it through this winter
But i'll never make it through this fall

True Love

i won't promise the moon
cause the moon i can not get
i won't promise you fortunes girl
cause i haven't any yet
i won't promise you wings of love
cause my feet are on the ground
i won't promise eternal youth
cause no fountain have i found

chorus:
and even though i wish i could
give you all the things above
what i promise to you girl
is true love

i won't promise to die for you
i'm sure you'd rather have me live
i won't promise the world to you
because it isn't mine to give
i won't promise to be a saint
i know you know me way too well
i won't promise you sunny days
cause it's impossible to tell

chorus...

bridge:
i know there are things that i can't do
and my flaws may run real deep
the sun and moon i can not give
but my love is yours to keep

Want to Be

i want to be happy for you girl but i can't be
i want to be everything to you the way you are to me
i want to be the reason for the sparkle in your eyes
i want to be the reason that you smile when you go to sleep at night
i want to be the man you love, the man you touch, the man you dream about
i want to be the single-most important thing that you just can't live without

i want to be happy for you girl and lord knows i try
i want to be a rock so you don't have to see all the tears i cry
i want to be the pillar that you lean on when you're tired of this world
i want to be the shoulder that you run to when you need to cry my girl
i want to be the man you love, the man you touch, the man you dream about
i want to be the single-most important thing that you just can't live without

oh,rain is pouring now and i'm broken down inside
oh,storm clouds on the way and i am terrified
oh,i just don't see how i can possibly survive
without your love, the love that keeps me alive
i want to be happy for you girl and some day who knows
you might find the love you once had for me so many moons ago

and i'll be the reason for the sparkle in your eyes
i'll be the reason that you smile when you go to sleep at night
i'll be the man you love, the man you touch, the man you dream about
i'll be the single-most important thing that you just can't live without

Daddy's Not Home

Open all your widows let the sun shine in.
The world is spinning 'round you and back again.
Another day older, than yesterday.

the porch swings low, in the hot summer sun
remember sad and lonely, is never any fun
Daddys little girl, now don't you cry

He's up in heaven, singin his songs
He's up in heaven, singin his songs
Daddy's not Home, now Daddy's Gone.

look into the willow, how the shadows fall
remember your daddy, and his old Jews harp
smilin' on forever, as he played from his heart

good times gone, daddys not at home
a distant  faded memory, we loved his songs
what he never gave, he never ever had

took his only Bible, laid it on the shelf
just to remind us, to look nowhere else
Daddys not home, to whisper of love

He's up in heaven, singin his songs
He's up in heaven, singin his songs
Daddy's not Home, now Daddy's Gone.

Daddys gone forever, to heaven up above
he's finally found peace and that snow white dove
he used to hug and kiss us, his family with love

don't forget tomorrow's not important as today
That's just one sayin daddy used to say
breakin bread together on our knees

Daddy's not home, but I'm his little girl
he's up in heaven, lookin down on this world
teachin all the angels,to sing his songs

He's up in heaven, singin his songs
He's up in heaven, singin his songs
Daddy's not Home, now Daddy's Gone.
Daddy's not Home, now Daddy's Gone.

In Your Eyes

WHEN I SAW YOU ACROSS
THE DANCE FLOOR LAST NIGHT
YOUR EYES MET UP WITH MINE
I WAS FILLED WITH HEARTACHE
AND YOUR EYES WERE FILLED WITH LIES
HOW DO I GO ON, ONE DAY AT A TIME
REMEMBERING THAT LOOK IN YOUR EYES

CHORUS:
IN YOUR EYES
I CAN SEE A WHOLE NEW WORLD
IN YOUR EYES
I KNOW THAT YOU LOVE ANOTHER GIRL
YOU TOLD ME SO MANY LIES
I DON'T KNOW WHY
BUT I CAN SEE IN YOUR EYES
THAT YOU COULD NEVER BE
TRUE TO ME
OOH,OOH IN YOUR EYES

NOW THAT I KNOW
WE CANNOT LIVE THIS WAY
I KNOW I SHOULD LEAVE YOU ALONE
LET YOU GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE
AND I SHOULD GET ON WITH MY OWN
BUT THE MEMORIES ARE STILL HERE TODAY
REMEMBERING THAT LOOK IN YOUR EYES

(CHORUS)

Dust in the Light

In the stillness of her parlor
a blind old woman sings
feathered thoughts with a voice
that could carry you on its wings
the sky blue stillwater eyes
in her crumpled sketch of a face
have confined her sight to fingers
and every day to grace

it's only dust in the light
that reveals reality
she has more light in her eyes
than we'll ever see

knitting scarves and singing
childhood hymns on an omnichord
she thinks it funny how few things
she's ever adored
just that remembrance of beauty
on a single brilliant ray
in a dusty corner of her thoughts
where it will always stay

it's only dust in the light
that reveals reality
she has more light in her eyes
than we'll ever see

Just Put Your Head on My Shoulder

Just put your head on my shoulder
And please don't start to cry
Things happen in life that we can't explain
But still we ask the question why

Finding the strength to move on with your life
Don't feel like the right thing to do
Wishing that your life was closer to normal
Without always feeling so blue

Live your life from day to day
Stop always thinking about the past
If you ever happen to find true love
Pray to God that it will last

As you walk down the street all by yourself
You see a couple pass holding each others hand
All the good memories pop up in your head
Followed by all the broken plans

Live your life from day to day
Stop always thinking about the past
If you ever happen to find true love
Pray to God that it will last
