I was only five years old when grandpa passed away,
I don't recall too much from then, but I won't forget that day.
You see, I was told when you leave this world you fly up in the sky,
So when they put grandpa in the ground I soon began to cry.

"You'll see him in Heaven, son," my grandma said to me.
"He'll have a big smile on his face, just like there used to be.
Everybody has to leave and he has to fly away.

Grandma took her last breath almost ten years from that day.
I was older and I knew why she had to go away.
And although I knew where she went tears soon filled my eyes.
Mama took me in her arms and with a loving smile,

Everybody has to leave and she has to fly away.

Mama's end was coming at the age of sixty-three.
We all knew the time was near and we prayed to give her peace.
I took her hand as she grew weak and asked her not to leave.
She looked up at me and smiled and said these words to me.
